Haryana Urban Local Bodies minister Kavita Jain said she has decided
to give Rs 50,000 to each of the 19 district jails out of her
discretionary funds to make available "quality literary and religious
books" to the prisoners lodged in these jails.
She said the Jail Superintendents would constitute committees for purchase of literature for libraries established in each jail.
The grant would be released directly to the Jail Superintendents concerned at the earliest, Jain said.
She said it is the "responsibility" of the government to "connect" every citizen of the state with its cultural heritage.
Provision of such reading material could also help the prisoners in giving up the tendency of committing crime. The books would also increase the knowledge of prisoners, she added.
