Following the death of a young dancer at a wedding function in Punjab's Bathinda district, Haryana Government has banned carrying of arms at such functions in the state under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
“In view of the recent incidents of celebratory firings at weddings, Haryana Government has issued orders banning carrying of arms at such functions in the state,” said Additional Chief Secretary, Home, Ram Niwas on Monday.
He said that it has been noticed that people often indulged in celebratory firing during weddings after consuming alcohol. Taking serious note of such incidents, the Police Department has been directed to put a check on carrying of arms at wedding functions, in coordination with the district magistrate concerned, said he.
Aerial firing is also an offence punishable by six months’
imprisonment, said he while making an appeal to the people to stop their relatives from carrying arms at such functions.
Notably, a female dancer was shot dead in a celebratory firing during a wedding ceremony in Bathinda district on Saturday. A video of the incident that was posted on social media sites shows a man who is dancing and holding a .12-bore rifle fires in the air when a bullet pierces through the head of the dancer, indentified as Kulwinder Kaur.
In another incident last month, a self-styled godwoman, Sadhvi Dev Thakur, and her accomplices had gone on a firing spree during a wedding function near Karnal town in Haryana, leaving a woman guest dead and two others injured.
In the video footage, Sadhvi Deva Thakur was seen smiling and firing from her revolver in the air along with her men at the wedding venue. The armed bunch had allegedly aimed at the crowded dance floor and kept firing even as the families of the bride and groom had begged them not to.
